Accompanied for the duration of the tour by Andrea Izzotti, international award-winning underwater and naturalistic photographer, this tour aims to help you discover and photograph the wonders of Baja California.
Diving in the beautiful scenery of Los Islotes, you will be able to interact with the sea lions, followed by snorkeling with the largest fish in the world, the whale shark.
The tour then includes an expedition dedicated to snorkeling with the Marlins: a recent discovery that is attracting photographers and enthusiasts from all over the world, consisting of a very adventurous journey as we will tour through the middle of the ocean in search of sardine shoals.
Another part of this tour is dedicated to discovering and photographing the exciting landscape and beauties of this land. A real expedition with 4 × 4 vehicles, we will cross uncontaminated areas where the landscape changes constantly and where we can stop at your leisure to capture images with your camera.
The participants on this tour will be able to ask the accompanying photographer for advice and for those who can’t take photographs, there will also be a mini course that will open the mind to different possibilities of photography. The workshop will take place in the evenings where we will talk about what was photographed and how it was photographed, and we will learn how to choose the best images in each situation.
This tour is suitable for all photographers and non-photographers.
Photographers will find unique opportunities for underwater fauna. The latter, if they wish, can begin a journey that, perhaps, will excite them in the future for building new passions.
The workshop is the added value of this beautiful journey … and is included in the price!
THE SEA LIONS
Swimming with the sea lions is a unique and exciting experience. Upon arrival to the Los Islotes sea lion colony, you will be greeted by the cries of these very nice pinnipeds and you will have unique opportunities to interact with them. An unforgettable adventure both in diving and snorkeling in the breathtaking scenery of the islands in the Sea of Cortez. You will receive advice on how to get close to these animals and how to try to photograph them at best.
THE WHALE SHARK
Also known as the gentle giant, this placid shark has an almost 100% sighting percentage. Baja California is one of the few places in the world where you can be sure of sighting the world’s largest fish in the sea. The photographer will give you the best advice for taking photos in sometimes not very clear waters.
It has recently been identified as one of the most exclusive places in the world that with a little patience and luck, will lead us to swim with the marlin, the very fast fish that follow the banks of sardines to hunt. It will seem like being in a documentary and following the photographer’s suggestions; you will be able to take home unique shots, as well as the testimony of a phenomenon that recalls the rarest and wildest scenes in the ocean.
THE DESERT OF BAJA CALIFORNIA
The intense blue of the Sea of Cortez mixing with gigantic granite teeth, quilted plains of century-old cacti and the earth that looks like a palette of red-gray combinations is an unforgettable site. We will cross these areas of ancient missionaries aboard 4 × 4 off-road vehicles, accompanied by an expert guide and the photographer to capture not only the memories, but also shoot the exciting beauty of an overbearing and inhospitable nature. In the evening, we will camp under the stars and we will be able to discuss our experiences in front of the fire.
THE PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKSHOP
Thanks to the experience of the photographer who will accompany us, who for many years has plunged into the Sea of Cortez and has traveled to the most beautiful and exclusive places in Baja California, you will have the opportunity to be supported by an experienced professional who will share her “in the field” professionalism, without telling it from a desk or a stage, but at your same level, side by side, day after day.
This tour will serve as a traveling laboratory, therefore creating a sort of photographic trek that will allow you to expand your visions and create or elaborate your own style, following or avoiding the canonical rules, while developing your own language and photographic story.
After the meeting in the hotel, we will transfer to the diving center and we will leave by boat to the Espiritu Santo Island for our first encounter with the sea lions. The dive is very simple and accompanied by the guide so you can indulge yourself, not only interacting with the sea lions, but also with the other possibilities of marine life that the Sea of Cortez offers. This is the best season for the visit because the sea-puppies are already a little grown up and they are not afraid to get close. Two dives/snorkeling opportunities are planned – The photographers will find opportunities for unique shots. Breakfast on your own – Lunch on the beach – Dinner on your own – Night at the Hotel
After breakfast at the hotel, we will transfer to the diving center and leave by boat to the Espiritu Santo Island for a second meeting with the sea lions to repeat the experience and perfect our shots with these animals. If you want other destinations, other interesting dive sites are available. On the way back or on the way there, we will go in search of the whale shark (possibility of finding is 99.99%) and it will be possible, following the rules, to dive into the sea and approach this wonderful animal while snorkeling. Breakfast Included – Lunch on the beach – Dinner on your own – Night at the Hotel
After breakfast at the hotel, the morning will be dedicated to a tour of the city, with the possibility of shopping and some “urban” shots. Immediately after lunch, we will head North with hopes of arriving in the afternoon to the Pacific coast of Baja California in a large protected nature reserve, a strategic breeding ground for many marine species and 100 species of birds. Breakfast included – Lunch on your own – Dinner on your own – Night at the hotel
After breakfast at the hotel, we will have an early morning departure for the expedition in the Pacific with a specialized boat to follow the race of sardines with snorkeling and free diving opportunities. We will cross the wild landscapes of Bahia Magdalena before reaching the open sea. The photographers will have other possibilities of shots both on the surface and in the water. We will follow the movements of the sardine shoals just below the surface, ready to dive several times near the sardine “balls” during their run, who are chased by the fast marlins that will dart all over and we will therefore try to photograph them at best. We could also come face to face with the sea lions that often fish in the mad cloud of silver fish. The advice of the photographer will help us in these difficult but stimulating shots – Breakfast Included – Lunch on the boat or beach included – Dinner on your own – Night at the Hotel
Second day of expedition by boat to follow the phenomenon of the migration of sardines and the hunting of striped marlins under the water’s surface. In this period, the visibility is usually excellent, and this will allow us to observe the predators hunting for the bank and to try to photograph them in the best way, despite their great speed. In addition to marlins, we could encounter dolphins, orcas, mako sharks, blackbirds, mobula mantas, tuna, humpback whales, as well as a multitude of birds. In the late afternoon, we will leave for La Paz where we will arrive in the evening. Breakfast included – Lunch on boat or beach included – Dinner on your own – Night at the Hotel
In the morning after breakfast, we will visit the wonderful Sierra Guadalupe aboard the 4 × 4 vehicle, we will travel dirt roads and mountain roads where the desert nature of Baja California is intact. We will stop to photograph different landscapes and colors, from the blue of the sea to the red and black green of the mountains. In the early afternoon, we will reach a wonderful deserted beach where we will set up camp for a night under the stars. Breakfast included – Lunch in the camp – Dinner in the camp – Night in the camp
In the morning after breakfast in the camp, we will continue the exploration of the Sierra, visiting an oasis and ancient abandoned missions. We will visit remote valleys of the Sierra admiring the endemic plants and the colored oxide canyons. There will be great photographic opportunities again and if we are lucky, we could meet and photograph the “corrugated chimney” – the famous beep beep of Willy in the coyote cartoons. In the afternoon, we will arrive on a bank of a river where we will mount the second camp. Breakfast in the camp – Lunch in the camp – Dinner in the camp – Night in the camp
In the morning after breakfast in the camp, we will continue exploring the Sierra, arriving via off-road trails in the valleys that border the Pacific Ocean. There will be further opportunities to photograph landscapes, cactuses, vultures and the varied flora and fauna of this area. We will visit the deserted beaches and, depending on the waves and tides, we will be able to take advantage of the bathroom. We will have lunch on a deserted beach admiring the ocean. In the evening we will return to La Paz. Breakfast in the camp – Lunch in the camp – Dinner on your own – Night at the Hotel
